and so i think that kind of nerve hitting will be reflected in what happenses here in washington. >> are you really sensing, from your colleagues, that this is a tipping point? >> i really am sensing that there is an openness and willingness on the part of a lot of people who never would have considered -- for example, a ban on assault weapons which, as everybody knows, were designed for military use and right now even in the states that have them, like my state of connecticut and i know because i helped write the bill and then i personally defended it in court, in the trial in the argument before state supreme court when it was challenged constitutionally. it has essentially weaknesses or defects that need to be corrected. so on a wide range of issues, we can do better. we must do something. that's the refrain that i've heard throughout newtown, throughout connecticut and throughout the country from people who write or call. we must do something and i think it's reflected in very powerful statements that the president and vice president make. >> i had a very harrowing interview, the

from washington our investigative correspondent live at newtown high school. let me start with you, pete. what's the latest on the investigation and the question that investigators said they will tell us at some point which is how closer are we to knowing why? >> not much that i know of, chuck. they had been hopeful that they could extract some information from the computers that he had in the home. he was very into computers, they say. he was very socially with drawn. he was very engaged with computers. they say before he left his mother's house on the morning that he shot and killed her while she was sleeping, he damaged extensively his computers that he took the hard drive out and tried to tamper with the inside of it and pulled the disk out and did a lot of damage to it. it's not clear whether they will be able to extract information and they will try their best and there is hope they will find something. there was no letter or note left behind. he was not someone who apparently was involved in social media. he didn't post things on websites or chat rooms.

>> there is a huge debate in washington, and there has been ever since i have come to washington there has been a huge debate over guns, and gun control and assault weapons bans and background checks and gun shows and i have been hearing this debate for years and it is a debate that tnlz to resonate now and people feel very strongly on both sides and on the one hand people say less guns, that's better, and the other hand people want to have self protection and be able to protect themselves in their homes and be able to protect their families and so they want guns and this debate will go on. i am not saying i have the answers and i am not saying there are easy answers to this debate. in the immediate aftermath of a disaster like we just saw, i suspect that the debate will intensify at least in the short-term before we move onto something else. >> and dana bash, if you could weigh in on that as well. wolf alluded to the idea, the who, the why, the mandate, and all of these things that will be critical, maybe clues as to just how much teeth any initiative may have. are you getting any ear

we look at autism and killer's brains as we focus on mental health and tonight, no deal in washington. let's go aufz. good evening, everyone. "outfront" tonight, desperate for answers. investigators spent the day at the home of 20-year-old adam lan lanza, sweeping the house for evidence of a motive. there are also new details tonight about nancy lanza's where abouts in the days before the shooting. deborah fayerick is live outside the home tonight. what has happened there tonight and today? >> it's rather remarkable because the major crime squad has been here all day and as we push into the house, lights are on in the top and bottom floor. now, they brought back the emotional crime lab and they're processing this crime scene. investigators have not retrieved any information from the damaged computer, the one that gunman is alleged to have smashed into pieces. the hard drive so damaged the fbi is having a difficult time getting any data. so what investigators are doing now, about half a dozen of them in the house. they're going through all documents, files, medicine c cabine cabinets.
